my fiance and i live in nj, i am from rochester which is why we are getting married there, my future in laws are insisting that all out of towners or anyone staing at the hotel should go to the rehersal dinner, it is really up to the person, but it is a nice thing to do if they are from out of town.

We are having are rehersal dinner at Hamlin Beach and doing a BBQ, that way it keeps cost down and we can invite more people and have a great time!!!! The way I see it is the wedding is tha "fancy" event and the rehersal dinner is supposed to be relaxing evening before the big day.
Good Luck!

I was having the same problem. Instead of doing a big fancy dinner, my fiance and i decided to do a picnic at the Parish Hall of my church, so we COULD include our out of town guests. If that doesn't work, as it didn't with my cousin's recent wedding, you can always appoint someone to get your out of town guests together for dinner somewhere and have a small get-together afterward with those guests.

I think that it really depends on your relationship w/your in-laws. Technically, if they are paying the cost of the rehearsal dinner then they might feel that they get to pick the guest list. If that is the case, maybe you could have a family member host a get-together after dinner for your out of town guests. Every wedding is different as far as who is invited. But, I agree with you that often times out of town guests are included. You should just give your out of town guests notice if they are invited so that they have sufficient time to RSVP.

Everyone should be reminded that this is your day. Do your best to keep them apart however, they need to be adults about the whole thing. Everyone can hold their tounge for a few hours, don't ya think??
